Coco Cay snorkeling - fun and relax for you and your family
Truly, none of the promotional photos used by Royal Caribbean prepare you for how beautiful this little island is. Everything is clean, colorful and plentiful whether it is chaise lounge chairs, party beverages or (as always) tasty food. The palm trees and turquoise water are almost surreal. This is what we all dream the Caribbean will look like. Hallmark calendar picture perfect Caribbean. True, it is distilled and idealized like Disney perfect, but after Nassau, CocoCay was a tropical paradise. You’ll love it there. You should try snorkeling while on Coco Cay. You can bring your own equipment, and just go out snorkeling at your leisure, but at CocoCay, if you rent equipment, it is for all day instead of just a couple hours like a shore excursion. You can stay in the main beach area, or you can venture off away from the crowd and thoroughly enjoyed a serene day of peace and quiet plus better snorkeling than you can have with everyone in swimming. While you're on the island, give snorkeling a try and check out the beautiful coral reefs, colorful tropical fish and sunken wrecks. If you're looking for a relaxing snorkel location with a twist, Queen Anne’s Revenge (replica) is it! It's an easy swim from the shore and in very shallow water, making this a great spot for a novice swimmer. The cannons and fish make this a fun place to visit. Royal Caribbean has deployed several Reef Balls to encourage new reef development and to provide a haven for marine life. Reef balls are made of special concrete and placed underwater to foster the growth of coral, algae, etc., so that there can be more habitats for fish. Crew members and the cruise line's Aquatics Department are spearheading an initiative using concrete "reef balls" to rebuild a coral reef in the waters off CocoCay. The balls look similar to giant wiffle balls, made of a marine-friendly concrete, measuring up to four feet across by three feet tall and weighing as much as 1,750 pounds. The reef balls are deployed in two locations around CocoCay. These pictured here are placed in shallower waters near the Plane Wreck, closer to shore, to increase and enhance fish habitat and to act as a snorkeling path that leads guests to areas of interest. Additional balls are placed in deeper waters to assist in coral propagation. These balls also will be seeded with coral plugs to further spur the coral reef's growth. The lifeguard stands located in the water about 100 yards offshore, along the reef edge, providing for a safe haven for the local fish population. This is a great snorkel location for seeing lots of colorful tropical fish. And if you're not a stong swimmer, what better place to be than the lifeguard stand!
